I DIDN’T REPLY BUT turned and walked back into the house thinking, “Well, what the hell do I do about all this?”

Claire was never cold to anyone, so I was shocked that she had been with Aiden. Hell, she was the reason he was even on the ranch, for God’s sake—another thing we needed to clear the air about. The only thing I could do was confront her and find out what was up. So, I walked into the house and did just that.

“Claire, what do you have against this guy?”

“I don’t know,” she sighed and sat down at the table. “When I walked into the apartment and saw it had been used, I was curious who was here. So, I walked into the stables and heard him speak before I saw him.”

She looked at the floor and said, “I immediately thought it was your ex who’d come back. I don’t even know why I’d think that, but I did and when I called to him, he must not have heard me because he didn’t respond. That really ticked me off, so when I walked closer, I demanded he tell me why he was here. When he walked around the filly, I could see it was not your ex but some other guy. You’d think that would dampen my temper, but it riled it up instead, so I kind of laid into him. Then I was embarrassed, so I walked to the house. I expected him to follow, but when he didn’t, that riled me up even more.”

I’d been party to her anger more than once, so I knew to let it work itself out or I would be another recipient as well.

She continued, “Unfortunately, when he came in, I let my inner bitch rule my attitude. Devin, I guess I still have some unresolved issues with that ass of a man you dated. I’ll go talk to the boy and straighten things out.”

“Wait a moment before you do,” I requested. “I like this guy, probably more than I should after just a couple days together, but he feels different than the other men I’ve dated. He feels...right somehow.”

Claire stared at me for a moment, shook her head, and said, “Well, damned if I am or damned if I’m not. So, you’re telling me, this is the first guy you’ve felt this about and I go and make an enemy of him before I’ve had a chance to even meet him.”

I just looked at her, helpless to make the situation better.

“Well, shit,” she said and marched out the kitchen door toward the stables without saying another word.
